Join the magical squad of Crystal Gems as they embark on a journey to fight the two Prism-wielding gems. Steven Universe: Unleash the Light is a role-playing game based on the popular cartoon show Steven Universe. It is a single-player, colorful platform game where you can play as your favorite Gems member. The game features an original story from the show’s creator, Rebecca Sugar, and will feature the Cartoon Network voice cast.  

The cartoon show invades Apple

As mentioned, Steven Universe: Unleash the Light is based on the popular Cartoon Network show, Steven Universe. The show focuses on the band of magical beings that guard the universe and their half-human half-gem little brother, Steven. The TV series showcases Steven, as he learns how to be a hero and save the day, alongside the Gems—Garnet, Pearl, and Amethyst.

Steven Universe: Unleash the Light is the newest game title added to Apple Arcade’s growing catalog of mobile games. By subscribing to the app store’s monthly gaming service, fans of the cartoon show can download and play the game on their iPhones, iPad, and even Apple TV. The content is even slowly coming to Mac.

Collect your squad

In Steven Universe: Unleash the Light, players will play as Steven Universe characters to face off against two, new, prism-wielding Gems. There are six playable characters in the game, including Steven himself. Joining him in this endeavor are Pearl, Garnet, Amethyst, Lapiz, Lazuli, and Bismuth. As mentioned, the story and the characters are penned by Rebecca Sugar, herself, to keep the authenticity of the game. It even has the original voice cast. 

Aside from collecting characters that can help you in the battle, Steven Universe: Unleash the Light also allows you to customize your team. You can decide who’s in the party and who will be left in your character gallery. You can also unlock new abilities as well as alternate costumes to fit your style. 

Your team formation will also be important as it can allow you to create combo attacks. Speaking of combo attacks, the game lets you do Gem Fusions. You can play as Sunstone or Rainbow Quartz 2.0 to deliver a fatal blow to the enemy. 

Even if you are not a fan of the cartoon show, you will still enjoy the turn-based battles and generally pleasant look of Steven Universe: Unleash the Light. However, Apple Arcade is not exactly short when it comes to turn-based games, so you might find something else that suits your gaming preference.

A great pastime

Steven Universe: Unleash the Light is a nice game to have if you are looking for a game to kill time. It has a great aesthetic and a very simple game premise. However, its simplicity and lack of exciting battles do not help its replay value. It also doesn’t help that the game does not offer anything else, such as a side quest or a mini-game. Overall, it can be a great pastime, but will not cater to hardcore gamers.
